Highlights

INDULGE

Discover an ancient land untouched by time; a haven of serenity in which to reconnect with the rhythms of the earth. Immerse yourself in nature. Soak yourself in local culture. Explore the rich wildlife of Gal Oya, one of Sri Lanka’s most remote and least visited wilderness areas.

STYLE & CHARACTER

The lodge attracts nature-loving guests of all ages and stays of at least two nights allow time to enjoy their unique and well curated experiences (forest walks with Vedda chieftains, mountain biking, nature walks and safaris), and the rare tranquility of this isolated locale.

RELAX

The lodge embraces its pristine 20-acre surroundings. The bungalows were constructed by village craftsmen using locally sourced teak and granite, and roofed in illuk grass. Coconut coir binds beams – whole trees sanded and polished with their knots and age lines visible. The split level, A-framed restaurant/lounge sits on a small rise, overlooking the pool and ‘Monkey Mountain’ (which serious hikers can summit for 360-degree dawn views).

EXPLORE

The team is young and accommodating, and the six resident naturalists are extremely knowledgeable about the local surroundings and nature, and of Sri Lankan wildlife in general.  There’s a swimming pool, a selection of board games and field guides in the main lodge, as well as a wildlife research station (with accommodation for keen researchers).

Mobile phone signal is non-existent here, and there’s no Wi-Fi.

THE HOTEL

The lodge sits in blissful isolation near easterly Gal Oya National Park and amongst villages seemingly lost in time. Driven by experiences such as boat safaris to spy elephants and forest walks with Vedda chieftains, it offers a wholesome balance of culture, activity and relaxation.

Why we Love it  …

Activities and Culture

Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity and untouched natural habitats have been protected and nurtured for generations. For over 2,000 years, both ancient and contemporary Sri Lankan rulers have made it a priority to preserve the land and its wildlife.
Hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles and birds call the island home.

Yes, but better for the over-sixes. Most families sleep in one bungalow with an extra bed though the two-bedroom ‘villa’ is designed for larger groupings.
